Orthodontics

Need Orthodontic treatments on the Gold Coast or in Robina?

Dr Dan Hanson’s passion in dentistry include:

Jaw Orthopedics

His philosophy is to attempt to find causes and treat them – as oppose to treating just the effects of a problem. Here at Robina Village Dental Care you have access to – Functional Jaw Orthopedics (aka FJO). Dr Dan has spent over 150 hours of continuing professional development in this filed attending seminars and speaking with lecturers from all over the world.

This form of orthodontics attempts to ensure that the upper and lower jaws are the correct size, shape and position for the individual patient. This can result in a balanced jaw joint (see TMJ Treatment below for more).

TMJ Treatments

When the TMJ is balanced and the jaws are in their correct positions, a number of health benefits may be gained.  These can include,  reduced head and neck pain, less chance of migraines, decreased chance of tooth clenching or grinding (Bruxism), optimal breathing capacity, less chance of sleep apnoea.
Even nocturnal bed-wetting can be caused by low oxygen saturation and so can sometimes be cured by orthopaedic correction of jaw imbalances which can open up the airway.

What Dr Dan and the Robina Village team do for you…

1. Consultation
An in depth discussion about what you want, and a close look at what has caused your problem.  Many orthodontic problems have a particular cause such as an incorrect tongue function, swallowing reflex or breathing pattern.  We try to find the cause of the orthodontic problem and then if possible,  treat that cause.
This helps to reduce the chance of relapse after your treatment.

2. Case plan
Dr Dan will take impressions of your teeth and photographs, then send you for x-rays.  The x-rays are usually free if you have a Medicare card. Once all the information is gathered Dr Dan and the team at Robina Village Dental Care will put together a plan with details about what you can expect your treatment to involve.
There will be a quote and an estimated time frame for each stage of treatment.

3. Initial therapy
If there are any obvious causes of your problem such as a tongue tie, incorrect swallowing pattern or thumb sucking habit, these causes may be treated.  If you have a narrow jaw bone with not enough room for your teeth, this stage of treatment will usually also involve arch expansion using a simple appliance.
This way, there is usually no need to remove teeth to make space.

4. Final therapy
Once your jaws are the correct size, shape and position and the causes have been removed, Dr Dan may align your teeth to make them straight and get you looking great.

5. Case review
This is the most important part. The braces come off, the photos and final impressions are taken, and you get to go and celebrate with a great smile and a healthy jaw joint.
The benefits of this type of treatment can go well beyond a great smile and will be with you for life.
